What is Christmas in April?

Christmas in April* Calvert County, Inc. is a non-profit organization that repairs and improves the homes of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly, disabled, and families with children. Months of planning and preparation culminate in a flurry of activity on the National Rebuilding Day, the last Saturday in April. This is the day repairs are done.

Who is eligible?

Low-income homeowners who own their home and live in it are eligible to receive assistance.

What types of repairs are done?

The work done varies from house to house. Priority is given to repairs that improve safety and independence and lie within the ability of Christmas in April to complete in one day. Repairs may include plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and general repairs, as well as landscaping, yard clean-up and trash removal. For example: every year we replace roofs and siding, replace windows and doors, rebuild porches and decks, build handicapped ramps, replace floors and stairs, and rebuild bathrooms and kitchens. Non-working furnaces, hot water heaters and appliances may be replaced. We may paint the inside and outside of a house.

Do homeowners have to pay?

No, All repairs are free for the homeowners. Labor and supplies are donated and/or purchased by Christmas in April. But homeowners and family are asked to join in the spirit of neighbor-helping-neighbor if able.
